Cwmcarn United RFC v Bettws RFC

24th September 2016
Cwmcarn: 31  Bettws: 5

In spite of the Swalec website stating that Bettws didn’t cross the whitewash, I’m pretty sure they scored an unconverted try & the score-line did not reflect how close the match was. It was one of those games that could have gone either way, but for some great defence & having a kicker of the quality of James ‘The Metronome’ Baker, who was flawless off the tee. With Kyle Sterry’s precise kicking out of hand, Cwmcarn were always able to make inroads & keep the scoreboard ticking over, which eventually frustrated a determined Bettws outfit.

With a dominant scrum & functioning line-out, Bettws did well to stay in the game for as long as they did & hold The Carn to only 2 tries: One in each half. Cam ‘Tuff as Teak’ Ball scored a great try in the first half & had been determined to get that all game, having run himself to a standstill by the end (Carrying all that muscle has its drawbacks).

Hoppy was getting back to his best & clattering anyone foolish enough to get in his way. Cameron Jones was throwing himself at anything that moved with gay abandon & laying down an early marker for Player of the Year. At this rate he could be a triple winner: Including Best Newcomer & Most Improved. The backs weren’t letting anything through & looked to create something at every opportunity.

After the debacle at Crickhowell two weeks earlier & the inability to raise a side for a local derby friendly against Abercarn the week after; this was the perfect antidote to fast-growing negativity.

STAND-OUT PLAYER:
An overall good team performance, but for his all-round performance and metronomic kicking; James ‘Lomu-legs’ Baker was the deserving winner
