Old Tylarians RFC v Cwmcarn Unitited RFC

8th October 2016
Old Tylerians: 7  Cwmcarn: 27

Cwmcarn faced familiar old friends & foes, OT’s in the 3rd round of the cup & chasing an historic entry into the fourth round. I’ve been playing these blokes so long they are starting to feel like team-mates.

Carn were confident off the back of two straight league victories & having the luxury of fielding a strong side. OT’s weren’t short of confidence either, having recently beaten Cefn Fforest and holding Bettws to a draw.

The first half was a scrappy affair, with Cwmcarn dominating most aspects of play, but unable to finish off moves after several phases of play. Hoppy was prominent in loose play. There were times when he had four opposition players hanging off him; reminiscent of lions trying to drag a giant buffalo down in the Serengeti (That’s in Africa you know). The narrow OT’s pitch is not conducive to open, expansive rugby, but to give credit where it’s due; they defended with tenacity & made life difficult at ruck time. All that said, Carn were able to score a great try with some good attacking play with a touch of flair & panache thrown in for good measure – A lovely backwards off-load in the tackle from prop Nathan Burczyk (no nickname as yet). This led to Eagle Eye Sterry scoring under the posts.

The second half continued in similar vein to the first, with Cwmcarn pressing but making unforced errors. OT’s weren’t in the mood for giving up & scored a well taken try of their own. This seemed kick-start Carn into action & they scored two further tries; including a well-finished one from little whippet Dan Woods & a push-over scrum try finished off by big number 8 Josh Bussell.

STAND-OUT PLAYER:
For covering both sides of the scrum & showing a touch of the Sonny Bill Williams to boot – Nathan Billy-Boy Burczak (Closely followed by Hoppy & Josh B)
