10th September 2016 Crickhowell: 61 Cwmcarn: 12
This was a day when Cwmcarn made a good Crickhowell side look like a great one. Struggling for players on the first game of the season can often be a bad omen for the coming season: We hoped it was a little blip. In spite of this lame excuse, Crickhowell played with width and flair & were very worthy winners.
Losing fly-half Chris Hastings after 10 minutes, left only one back from the previous season & Chris Bartlett-Legge; bless his little cotton socks, made a valiant effort to be a 3 in 1 utility back against a good set of opposition three-quarters. Yours truly had to switch from tight-head to blindside flanker before the end of the first half, due to losing last season’s stand-out player & juggernaut, Hoppy - A difficult task was fast becoming Herculean. This was a day when The Carn would struggle to score tries, but no-one told Reuben Duracell that & he scored a good try after several phases of play.
Captain Jabba rose to the occasion & turned in a good performance, leading the charge from the front & scoring a length of the pitch try in the second half (Well kind of). He was ably assisted by a seriously enthusiastic Cameron ‘Jack In A Box’ Jones, who seemed to be everywhere. This didn’t change when he was thrown into the backs from the pack, due to injuries.
A big thumbs up for the players who turned up in difficult circumstances. I feel sure we will show our true colours in the games to come...Let’s bloody hope so.
STAND-OUT PLAYER: In spite of the fact he got turned over twice, due to some suspect body position in mauls; Carl ‘Jojones’ Hone (aka Jabba) played like a captain throughout & edged Cameron Jones for this accolade.
