Cwmcarn 52 Rhayader 3
Cwmcarn entertained Rhayader at Waunfawr Park on International Day with kick-off brought forward so players could see the match. Carn were expecting a comfortable win, especially considering it is an almost two hour drive for Rhayader to get there. Unfortunately the opposition showed up a player down and without a recognised front row – Yep, you guessed it – Passive scrums.
These games always have a feel of training as opposed to a competitive match, with both teams guaranteed their ball & with lots of time for the opposition to see what are going on whilst the other side practices training ground moves. With numerical advantage things favoured the home side & that is how the game panned out.
To give credit to Rhayader, they have to make long journeys for half their matches & rarely if ever let people down. They do not have a large pool of players to call on & struggled from the outset. Carn dominated territory & possession & although the score looked good, it could & should have been much more. There was little cohesion & Carn resembled a 15 piece jazz band, with everyone playing solos with no real sense the 15 people on the park had met & trained together before. It proved to be quite a frustrating afternoon.
There was little to be taken from the game (except the bonus point win of course). Some of the highlights were Big Joe’s first try for Cwmcarn that actually came from a well worked move, with Jabba nicely delaying the final pass for Joe to canter underneath the posts. Joe was grinning from ear to ear for the rest of the match. Another highlight was Dan Woods 60 metre solo-run before feeding Jeevesy (aka Llewellyn) to score near the posts.

For his first try & general all around performance Big Joe gets the honours
