Girling RFC V Cwmcarn RFC 7/11/15

Girlings 21  Cwmcarn 7
Cwmcarn played Girlings on the wettest, windiest day of the year & hailstones were thrown in for good measure.
In spite of the inclement weather, both teams were intent on throwing the ball around.
Girlings were on top and entrenched in Carn's 22 for the first quarter and only good defence (not something Carn have been particularly noted for), prevented Girlings scoring. The scrums were going backwards, Girlings big forwards were trundling along making ground; only to be thwarted by solid defence, with one notable big hit from Carn's resident perma-tan hooker & captain - Jabba.
Almost from out of nowhere, with Girlings attacking again, the ball was turned over by back row Walley, who himself, had been Carn's only gain line breaker to this point. The ball was quickly spun out and with 65 metres to go, in terrible conditions; Luke Lovell scored a spectacular solo try, showing great skill, footwork & speed. It will be right up there for try of the season at the end of the playing year.
Unfortunately, Carn were unable to maintain the pressure & Girling replied with a good try of their own before half time.
With the scores at 7 apiece, it was anyone's game in the second half. The elements did not particularly favour anyone, as the wind was swirling.
The scrums tightened up and defence remained resolute, but it was Girling who scored 2 tries quickly in the second half and converted both - Impressive given the prevailing weather conditions. Carn rallied and had chances of their own; the best falling to Dan Woods, who like Lovell before him, showed good skill & footwork to get over the try-line, only to be called back by the referee, as the linesman had seen a foot hit the whitewash.
Overall, a good performance from both teams showing excellent handling with a wet ball.
Cwmcarn were left ruing missed opportunities, but there was a vibrancy in the changing room, as the players knew they had performed well.
Retired coach Ieuan made a return at scrum half & wasn't too bad either...we may keep him on.
